World Stroke Organization’s statement on Ukraine
14 Mar 2022Access to health is a fundamental human right and any armed conflict endangers patients and health care professionals and disrupts the delivery of treatment and care to stroke and other patients.
While WSO remains apolitical and focused on advancing healthcare and stroke science, we condemn vehemently the invasion of a sovereign country and the endangerment of Ukrainian non-combatant civilians which stands in clear contravention of the Geneva Convention. We offer our solidarity and support to colleagues and citizens within Ukraine, as well as the increasing numbers who have been forced to leave their homes, families, and communities in order to secure their safety.
Access to health is a fundamental human right and any armed conflict endangers patients and health care professionals and disrupts the delivery of treatment and care to stroke and other patients.
While armed conflict attempts to create division between people, we know that our global community is united in our commitment to collaboration across borders, peace and humanitarian principles. We call upon our international network of politicians, academic partners, and members to support work towards a negotiated peace which is fundamental to the security and well-being of all.
Today we speak with one voice for peace in Ukraine and the rest of Europe and are working closely and in dialogue with our members in Europe to help ensure they have the support they need to provide humanitarian assistance to people in Ukraine and to those displaced by the conflict.
