Sickle Cell Disease (II)
- Complicated by stroke in 25% before the age od 45
‐Ischemic stroke most common before the age of 20
‐Hemorrhagic stroke occurs after the age of 20
‐2/3 of patients will have recurrent stroke in 2 years from index event
- Non-atherosclerotic stenosis and occlusion of the proximal cerebral vessels
- Systemic manifestations:
‐Vaso-occlusive crises causing chest, back and extremity pain
‐Compensated hemolytic anemia
